Clothing have long provided protection to human societies, but the purpose of the wearing of clothes has changed a lot over history. Today, being an important way of emotional and social expression, the fashion industry has a role that goes far beyond meeting a basic human need.
As one of the most relevant sectors in the global economy, the USD 1.3 trillion fashion industry employs more than 300 million people along the value chain. It is one of the most influential sectors in the world, not just in terms of financial power, but also in the form of trends, beliefs, and attitudes.
So the question is: how can we use this influence for good?
In the last 15 years, clothing production has approximately doubled mainly due to the βfast fashionβ phenomenon, with quicker turnaround of new styles, increased number of collections offered per year, and β often β lower prices.
Increasing the average number of times clothes are worn is the most direct lever to capture value and design out waste and pollution in the textiles system. Studies affirm that if only the number of times a garment is worn were doubled on average, GHG emissions would be 44% lower.
