Carnatic music is the main musical tradition of South India

Purandara Dasa, who is known as the "father (pitamaha) of Carnatic music", formulated the system that is commonly used for the teaching of Carnatic music. Venkatamakhin invented and authored the formula for the melakarta system of raga classification in his Sanskrit work, the Chaturdandi Prakasika (1660 AD).

Origin Of Saptha Swaras In Indian Karnatic Music

The Swars of Indian Music are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa Shadjam(Sa), Rishabham(Re), Gandharam(Ga), Madhyamam(Ma), Panchamam(Pa),Dhaivatam(Da), Nishadam(Ni). These shudha swaras or notes are traditionally known to have originated from sound of different animals and some have taditional meanings of their own. Each swara is associated with one of the seven chakras of the body. Sa is sound associated with peacock, Re-bull, Ga- The goat, Ma- the dove/heron, Pa- the cuckoo/nightingale, Da- the horse, Ni- the elephant.
