Kuchipudi is a classical Indian dance-drama that originated in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh in the 17th century. The name comes from the village of Kuchipudi, which is about 35 kilometers from Vijayawada. The dance is known for its graceful movements, expressive faces, and elaborate costumes. It's characterized by fast rhythms and fluid movements that create a unique blend of control and abandon, strength and delicacy. Kuchipudi tells stories through dance, music, and song, and is rooted in the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text of Natya Shastra. Kuchipudi has its origins in a long tradition of dance-drama, and was originally a male tradition. Groups of men would travel from village to village enacting stories from Hindu mythology, similar to Elizabethan theater where men would play women's roles.
