Klebsiella Pneumonia

Unveiling a Silent Threat

Who's Kleb? Meet the Microbe

Kleb is like a “undercover agent” of bacteria—generally lurking in the environment and your gut without causing trouble. However, when it decides to step into the spotlight, it can “pneu-matically” take over, causing serious infections like pneumonia and UTIs.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the environment and as part of the normal flora of the human gut. It can be a benign inhabitant but has the potential to cause serious infections, particularly in people with weakened immune systems or chronic diseases. Klebsiella pneumoniae are a type of bacteria that can cause many different infections. You are much more likely to pick up these germs when you are in the hospital. These germs are the most common cause of pneumonia you get while you’re in the hospital. This is also known as hospital-acquired pneumonia. You’re much less likely to get pneumonia caused by these bacteria outside of hospitals. Klebsiella pneumonia you pick up in the community makes up only 3% to 5% of cases.
