Benachin, also known as Cheb (Thieb), is the original
variation of Jollof rice. It is originally from the Senegambia Region,
formerly known as the Jollof Empire, of West Africa. Benachin
is famously known as Jollof Rice and is cooked across Africa, where
different countries cook their own modified versions. The origin of the
dish and what country cooks it best has been a major debate on social
media, especially between Ghanaians and Nigerians but now we all know
the dish originated from Senegambia (Gambia and Senegal). Senegambians
have various types of Jollof Rice, which include red, white, fish,
chicken, beef, lamb and many more.
Benachin is the Gambian name for Jollof Rice and it means One Pot in
Wollof. The Senegalese call it Thieb (pronounced Cheb) means Rice in
Wollof.
