Baroque Period 1600-1750

The Baroque cello was played in 17th and 18th centuries. It was shaped differently with a higher bridge and a shorter bow. The Baroque cello was famous for having a more twangy sound and chamber music heavily featured ornaments such as trills and appogiatturas. The composer Johann Sebastian Bach is symbolic of baroque music in his cello suites for solo cellists.

Classical Period 1750-1820

Romantic Period 1830-1910

The Romantic period of music was a period of great evolution of new techniques and music instruments. Characterised by larger dynamic changes and grand orchestras famous composers include the renouned Tchaikovsky and Brahms. Romantic music featured the use of rubato - the slight speeding up and slowing down of music - as well as adventurous harmonies and modulations.

Modernism: Classical Music in the 20th Century

Claude Debussy and Leonard Bernstein. Two of the most regarded Classical musicians of the 20th century. Modern Classical music has involved great experimentation and was influenced by other styles such as the emergence of Jazz as well as changing global politics with the Nazi and Soviet regimes placing strict expectation on Classical composers.
