What is Pickleball?
Its an internationally fun, social and addictive racket sport that you will love!
Two players (singles), or four players (doubles) hit a perforated hollow plastic ball called a "whiffle ball" over a 36-inch-high (0.91 m) net using solid-faced paddles. The outer size of the court is the same as a badminton court.
Pickleball was invented in 1965 but it is now the fastest growing sport in the USA for the third year running and participation in the UK has been doubling over the last few years to now around 8,000 players. With this rapid growth, Pickleball England, the UK association has predicted by 2025 there will be 25,000 players in the UK.
Useful Pickleball Terminology
- Dink – A soft shot, made with the paddle, hit so that it just clears the net and drops into the non-volley (kitchen) zone
- Fault – An infringement of the rules that ends a rally
- Kitchen – The non-volley zone 2.13 meters from the net on both sides
- Server number – When playing doubles, either #1 or #2, depending on whether the player is the first or second server for their side
- Side out – Occurs when the serve moves to the opponent’s side
The rules of pickleball make for even and fun matches allowing all ages to participate together; children to those in their 80s are able to successfully play together and be on a level.
