Get to know Uruguay
Uruguay, a small country in southern South America, is bordered by
Argentina, Brazil, and the Atlantic Ocean. There are about
3.5 million inhabitants and the official language
is Spanish. Uruguay's economy is primarily based on agriculture,
manufacturing, and services, with significant exports of beef,
soybeans, and dairy products. Its capital and the most crowded city
is Montevideo.
Known for its rich cultural heritage, Uruguay is celebrated for its
passion for football, vibrant Carnival celebrations, and traditional
cuisine featuring dishes like asado and chivito. Popular tourist
destinations include the historic city of
Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage
site; the beach resort of Punta del Este; and the
capital, Montevideo, with its rich cultural scene and historic
neighborhoods like Ciudad Vieja.
Interesting facts:
- In Uruguay there are approximately 11.9 million cows, what it means that there are more than three times as many cows as there are people.
- Uruguay is the biggest consumer (per person) of beef in the world.
- The first international soccer match was hosted in Uruguay in 1902 as was the first-ever World Cup tournament in 1930. This actually came about after soccer was dropped from the Olympics program – after Uruguay had won back-to-back gold medals in Paris in 1924 and Amsterdam in 1928!
- It has one of the highest literacy rates in Latin America, and education is free and compulsory for children up to the age of 14.
