Snowboarding was developed in the United States,
inspired by skateboarding, sledding, surfing, and skiing. It became
popular around the world and was introduced as a Winter Olympic Sport at
Nagano in 1998 and featured in the Winter Paralympics at Sochi in 2014.
Since snowboarding's inception as an established winter sport, it has
developed various styles, each with its own specialized equipment and
technique. The most common styles today are:
freeride,
freestyle,
and
freecarve/race. These styles are used for both recreational and professional
snowboarding. While each style is unique, there is overlap between them.
Snowboarding for me, means freedom, it gives me peace of mind, it
disconnects me from anything else that might be happening in my life, it
makes me focus only on those turns, on the upcoming bumps and jumps, on
the direction of the wind, and the sun. It makes me truly acknowledge
the here and the now, and appreciate
the small and simple things and just flowing, floating down the snowy
mountains, feeling the wind on my face, it's pure pleasure.
