Roatán is an island in the Caribbean, about 65 kilometres off the northern coast of Honduras. It is located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, and is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras. The island was formerly known in English as Ruatan and Rattan. Learn More in Wikipedia
English has been the primary language spoken on Roatán since the late 1700's when English "Privateers" and Pirates begun to settled on Roatán. They accept Honduran lempiras and US dollars. Honduras is home to the second largest coral reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef, giving the perfect opportunity for snorkelers and divers to explore an underwater garden. Striking coral reefs around the Bay Islands including shallow fringing crest reefs, patch reefs, and shelf-edge reefs. Roatan and the Bay Islands are one of the few places in the world that visitors are able to see whale sharks year-round. The Garifuna people, who were brought by the British in 1797, have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
