• Welcome Artists!

I have always had a passion for painting or drawing but my favourite medium has always been oils. Oils are renowned for their ability to show deep hues and a sense of warmth to a painting, especially portraits.

This portrait of Rembrandt is one of my favourites. You can really see the level of detail and the subtle variations in skin colour that he was able to capture. Oil paint can be applied directly to the canvas or applied as a glaze, by mixing it with linseed oil. Various layers of paint are added in different stages starting with the thinnest layer first and then gradually increasing the thickness of the paint over several layers. This is known as the "thin over thick" technique. Layers painted "wet on wet" or "wet on dry". This process must be done slowly, over several weeks, so that the oil paint doesn't crack as it dries. In my opinion, it's worth the wait!
