How to care for a Kalanchoe Plant

Kalanchoe (collin-CO-wee), an evergreen plant native to tropical Madagascar, is a common houseplant grown for its attractive, numerous clusters of colourful flowers.

Tip 1
Kalanchoe needs plenty of light to bloom. Place the Kalanchoe close to a sunny window and keep warm; temperatures between 13-29 degrees C (55-80 degrees F) would be ideal.

Tip 2
Plant the Kalanchoe in well-drained, well-aerated soil, such as 50% peat moss and 40% perlite. Use a clay pot to plant the Kalanchoe, as the roots can be quite sensitive.

Tip 3
Like other succulents, Kalanchoes do not need much water. Allow the soil to dry in between watering. Do not over water as the roots can be prone to rot.

Tip 4
Trim off any dead or wilting flowers at their stems. Kalanchoe blooms throughout the year at random times, but deadheading them as needed can help maintain vigorous production.

Tip 5
Fertilize Kalanchoe during periods of new growth. While your Kalanchoe is blooming, feed it every few weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer.
