I am from South Africa but I am passionate about the chinese musical instrument called "Guqin". I can't help but be captivated by the soothing sound and deep cultural significance of Guqin. I feel as though I am in constant communication with the spirit of China with each note I hear, linking me to the core of its people and their unwavering resilience. It is sometimes referred to as "the father of Chinese music" or "the instrument of the sages. Guqin instruments have different styles namely fuxi style guqin, zhongni style guqin, hundun style guqin, banana leaf style guqin, and many more. My passion for the Guqin instrument started from watching chinese dramas. It's a lifelong endeavor rather than just a hobby or to pass time.
The Guqin, also known as the chinese zither is a 7 string long rectangular musical instrument that can be plunked with the fingers.
It has been around for over 3000 years.
It was originally practised by scholars and nobleman.
This musical instrument is significant in the chinese culture as it symbolises the highest cultural and spiritual ideals.
The history of Guqin dates back to the Zhou Dynasty(1046 BC - 771BC). The oldest guqins survived from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD)
