Western riding is an American style of horseback riding. A western saddle was designed for the rigors of ranch work. Itโs meant to keep you and your horse comfortable for hours, give you plenty of space for attaching saddle bags and rigging, be strong enough to dally a steer, and help prevent you from slipping off during rapid maneuvers or over rugged terrain. Today, most western riding doesnโt happen on an actual ranch. In the Netherlands, there are many amateur western riders who just love to take their horses on (long) trail rides. Those western saddles are very comfy! There are also many competitive disciplines in western riding, such as: Western pleasure, Western horsemanship, Reining, Cutting, Team penning, Working equitation, Working / Reined Cow Horse, Western trail riding, Barrel racing, Western dressage, Cowboy dressage, and Western ranch riding.
