Rotweiller

There are various opinions about the origin of the Rottweiler, including the assumption that the ancestors of the Rottweiler can be seen in the dogs of Roman shepherds, because the later area of origin of the dogs belonged to the Roman Empire in ancient times (see Decumatland ). Over the course of several centuries, these dogs were bred for fitness, intelligence, stamina and driving abilities. They thus became indispensable helpers for cattle traders and butchers . This dog was most common in and around the then imperial city of Rottweil in what is now Baden-Württemberg , and so it was given the name Rottweiler in the late Middle Ages . Rottweil was in the 18th/19th. In the 19th century it was an important livestock trading center, from which cattle and sheep were driven primarily to Breisgau , Alsace , Lake Constance and the Neckar Valley . The livestock trade was mainly in the hands of the local butchers . It was they who used Rottweilers to guard and herd large livestock and bred them as butcher dogs for this purpose. During this time the breed became known nationally. The Rottweiler's original task of driving and guarding livestock, as well as its physique, make its relationship with mountain dogs clear. [1] Over time, however, with the advent of the railway and other vehicles, livestock was increasingly transported in other ways, and the Rottweiler lost its previous purpose. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, the practical value of this breed was tested in the police service, and in 1910 the Rottweiler was recognized as a police and military dog. [1]
