Bibim (비빔) translates as “mixed,” and bap (밥) means “cooked rice,” so bibimbap literally means “mixed rice.” Before
eating it you are supposed to mix everything all together. It is often served in a hot stone bowl called dolsot (돌솥), which crisps the rice and adds a unique flavor to the dish.

Bibimbap originated during the Joseon Dynasty in the late 16th century, and it was originally eaten by the royal family and aristocracy. It was a dish considered to promote health and balance, and the ingredients used were thought to have specific properties that would promote overall well-being. The dish was a symbol of status and was eaten at special events and occasions. Later on, as the dish became more popular, it evolved and was enjoyed by people of all classes. Eventually, it became the popular dish we know today!
