The children and young people enjoy the community as well as the meal,
they organize recreational and reflection activities each week, under the
leadership of volunteer.
The community collects food from the local businesses and mines
surrounding areas for the program, and this past Christmas the
community gathered food parcels to give to each child. The project also
gives each child a backpack and supplies for school. One volunteer,
interviewed about her work at the soup kitchen, stated through her tears,
āThe tears are not of sadness, but tears of Godās promise and the future
of this children.
The effects on these children and their families are dire. For many,
hungry children, a school meal may be their only nutritious meal during
the day, without it they lose the protection of vital vitamins and
micronutrients. For poor families, the value of a meal in school is
equivalent to about 10 percent of a householdās monthly income. For
families with several children in school, that can mean substantial
savings. The loss of the school meal means a loss of income.ā
The children have big dreams of making it out the rural areas,
dreams of making a huge difference in their communities when they are able to,
so this program not only helps with meals but schooling too, the volunteers helps learners
with homeworks and clothing, ensuring that no school day is missed, that alone is ensuring they
make it in life.
