What is now a global obsession, Bubble Tea was originally invented in Taiwan 🇹🇼 in the 1980s.
Milk tea was already well-known in Taiwan, as tea drinking a cultural practice in East Asia. The original recipe was black tea with milk, tapioca balls on the bottom, along with a topping of shaved ice.
Bubble tea, or Boba has since evolved over time and as it grew more widespread throughout Taiwan, stall owners started introducing fruit boba, using fruit powders and syrups in lieu of actual fruit.

wǒ yào yī bēi zhēn zhūnǎi chá.
I’d like one pearl milk tea.
Cashier:
中杯或是大杯？甜度、冰塊 (块)？
Zhōngbēi huòshì dàbēi? Tiándù, bīngkuài?
Medium or large? Sweetness and ice?
Customer:
中杯. 半糖、少冰。
Zhōngbēi. Bàntáng, shǎobīng.
Medium. Half-sweet, less ice.
