In South Africa, a learner's permit is required for anyone wishing to apply for a driver's license. It gives you the groundwork to practice driving skills, methods, and manoeuvres. In order to lawfully drive on South African roads, a citizen must possess a driver's license. Different licences are issued for the various categories of motor vehicle.

If you don't already have a learner's license, you need to pass a theoretical test, known as the K53 learner's licence test. If you pass the test, you can get a learner's license that will allow you to drive on public roads as long as a valid driver's license is always in the passenger seat.
