In South Africa, a learner's permit is required for anyone wishing to apply for a
driver's license. It gives you the groundwork to practice driving skills, methods, and manoeuvres.
In order to lawfully drive on South African roads, a citizen must
possess a driver's license. Different licences are issued for the various categories of motor vehicle.
If you don't already have a learner's license, you need to pass a theoretical test, known as the
K53 learner's licence test.
If you pass the test,
you can get a learner's license that will allow you to drive on public roads as long as a
valid driver's license is always in the passenger seat.

Requirements for a driver's license booking:
- Your learner's license.
- Your identity document (ID).
- You may go for an eye test at the DLTC or have an eye test performed by a qualified optometrist and submit the form at the testing centre.
- Four identical black-and-white photographs.
- Ensure you have a printed out form of your booking.
- A booking fee of R220 to R300 (contact the DLTC before you go to book your test to confirm the current fees).
- To prove residence, provide proof of postal and residential address, such as a utility bill, affidavit, or letter from the ward councillor confirming your address, especially if staying in an informal settlement.
