Axolotls are adorable little amphibians known as the “Mexican walking fish". As legend has it, the axolotl is the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, which disguised himself as a salamander to avoid being sacrificed. These fascinating creatures have caught the eye of scientists due to their ability to perfectly regenerate limbs and organs with ease.
Axolotls were deemed critically endangered in 2006 and, as of today, there may be as few as 500 left in their natural habitat. Even if you don't live near the only wild habitat they have left (Xochimilco, Mexico) you can help protect them from home with your actions, voice, money, and time.
