Rapiers also known as Espada Ropera, dress sword in English, was a style of sword commonly used throughout Europoe during the Renaissance period of 14th through 17th centuries. It was compromised of straight and slender blade with an extremely sharp point. While the blade was often double edged, the rapier remained primarily a thrusting weapon as opposed to a cut and thrust such as a longsword or backsword. Although the average weight for a rapier was 1 kg or 2.2 lbs, it was balanced such that a person could wield it in one hand. This coupled with the advanced and often ornate cross guards lent it being a favorite armament for dueling or as an accessory piece to complement an outfit. Although the term rapier in modern times has become a catch-all phrase for any long, thin bladed thrusting sword, one cannot deny the beauty of these stylish and often deadly swords.
