My mother grew up in Mexico eating fruits for breakfast, and made sure
her children grew up in Hawai'i in the same fashion. Tropical fruits
such as mango, starfruit, kiwi, and papaya were readily available. I
remember the first time I ever tasted a kiwi. I was about 6 years old
and I was about to head outside to play. My mom took a seat at the
dining room table and told me to come. She showed me the kiwi and told
me I needed to try it. The exterior was very unappetizing to me, but the
texture definitely was fun to touch. I couldn't believe it was a fruit.
She cut it open. The inside was green! And slimy looking. And what were
all those little dark specks? I was intrigued but not curious enough to
taste it. My mom spooned out a bite and egged me on. Her look of
satisfaction after a bite was what convinced me. I took the spooned
piece and put it in my mouth. And. OMG. I was instantly in love.
My obsession with fruits began.
