Ancient Indian medicine



The term 'ayurveda' comes from Sanskrit and is a combination of the words 'ayus' (life or long approach) and 'veda' (knowledge of science).
Ayurveda is a healing art that is thousands of years old; it is the health system of the ancient Indian Vedic civilization and is considered the oldest health system in the world. Ayurveda is recognized by the WHO as a traditional medicine. The traditions in the ancient Ayurvedic scriptures describe that the basic principles of Ayurveda were perceived long ago by highly evolved people in their own consciousness through introspection. Therefore, in the beginning these principles were passed on only from teacher to student and only much later, when a transmission in this way no longer seemed reliable, were they written down in the first writings and works of Ayurveda.
