Fun facts about the Big Five

Elephants

The Elephant
One of the frequently observed 'Big Five' creatures in Kenya is the African elephant.African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth ! The males can reach 3m tall and weigh between 4,000 -7,500kg.! They can be identified by their large ears that look somewhat like the African continent. Cool, huh! Also, elephant tusks never stop growing, so enormous tusks can be a sign of an old elephant.

Lions

The Lion
You may walk into a zoo in any country today and find a lion, but Africa is the only place with an existing native lion population. This is why we commonly refer to lions as African lions (Panthera leo).Lions are the second-largest cat; with long, well-muscled bodies, short legs, and enormous heads.Males stand at 1.2 meters with a 3.3-meter body length at 189kg while females are 1.1 meters tall and have a body length of about 2.4 meters at 126kg. Fun fact! The heaviest lion ever recorded weighed 272kg, a male lion in Mount Kenya.

Rhinos

The Rhino
In Kenya, the rhino duo, the white and black rhinos, share their home. The white rhino, a popular sight near Lake Nakuru, steals the spotlight with its frequent appearances. Meanwhile, the slightly smaller and feisty black rhino adds a touch of spice to the wildlife scene. Venture into the Mara Triangle, where a notable black rhino community resides. While a rhino rendezvous during your Masai Mara safari might be a bit elusive, the Mara hosts 35-50 black rhinos at any given time.

Leopards

The Leopard
A significant number of leopards call Kenya home, although catching a glimpse of them is like discovering hidden treasure—they're masters of staying out of sight. They prefer the solitude of the night for their endeavors. They can weigh between 23-90 kg and their average lifespan ranges from 12-17 years. Leopards have dark spots called rosettes, which create circular patterns on their light fur. In East Africa, the leopard patterns tend to be more circular. African leopards are spectacular hunters and very strong swimmers. They can run up to 58 km per hour and are known for their incredible agility and strength.

Buffalos

The Buffalo
The Cape Buffalo (or African Buffalo as it's also known) is one of the most dangerous animals in East Africa. Lone males in particular can be aggressive, unpredictable and weigh approximately 800 kilograms. A dangerous combination. Female buffalos protecting their young are also extremely aggressive. In the Mara buffalo are generally found in herds of approximately 100 individuals or more. They are mostly found near water sources, especially during the dry season.
