January is a month for making (and trying to keep!) resolutions to make your new year the best one yet. One resolution that will not only benefit you, but also the planet and the other living beings we share it with is trying veganism.
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption and use of animal products. This includes meat, fish, gelatin, eggs, milk, and honey. Those following a vegan lifestyle also refrain from using animal-derived materials like leather, wool, cashmere, feathers, and silk.
Know how we're told to eat the rainbow? Vegan diets are rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, pulses, nuts, and seeds— so not only are these dishes vibrant in color, but they're also rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. A vegan diet can help people lose excess weight, decrease their risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, and may protect against certain cancers.
Did you know that following a vegan diet can significantly reduce your carbon footprint? Vegan diets contribute 75% less to climate-heating emissions than diets that include meat and its by-products. They also contribute significantly less towards water pollution, land and water use, and the destruction of wildlife compared to animal-based diets.
An estimated 92 billion land animals (and trillions of aquatic animals) are kept in cruel, unnatural conditions and killed annually for food. Going vegan is one of the best actions you can take to help combat this cruelty. Think you alone won't have an impact? Individually, you can save approximately 200 animals by following a compassionate, vegan diet year-round!
