Why I love December

Everything Started When I was a Kid

As a child, I was always very imaginative and very dreamy, so the fantasy of Christmas always appealed to me. Also, December was my family's special time, so my parents made an effort to have more activities during this time. It was also the only time I saw most of my family, so I could always see all my cousins and aunts and uncles.
In my country, December is a celebration in itself, Christmas is not only on the 25th, it starts from the first of December with the alborada, in which we celebrate the beginning of the month.
From beginning to end, December for me was a thousand holidays and a thousand reasons to be happy. There is no school, I could sleep a lot and play with my cousins every day. It was heaven.

Why I love it as an Adult

I became a full-fledged adult during the covid pandemic. The pandemic meant that many of us had to grow up out of nowhere, without understanding how to do it and in a hasty manner. That was the first Christmas I spent without the people I loved the most. We simply could not be together for safety and some of my loved ones passed away.
Somehow, all those events just made the holidays more meaningful to me. Christmas for me was always about happiness and family, and instead of being sad, I always use that time to honor those who can no longer be with us. I always remember them, so that somehow I can live my joy with them.

My Personal Opinion on Traditions

The Christmas traditions in Colombian have everything to do with Christianity. God, Jesus and the Virgin are in almost every aspect of our daily life. Although I am not a religious person, I consider these celebrations to be very beautiful.
Nowadays, for many people, it's not about something spiritual, it's about having a good time eating, dancing, talking and just hanging out. The most beautiful thing about December, for me, is being able to remember what it's like to celebrate the passing of time, to look back on the year and to remember what it's like to spend time with the people we love.

I mentioned Christmas a lot, but the first holiday of the month for all Colombians is the día de las velitas, day of the candles. I invite you to watch a video showing how this holiday is celebrated.
