Choosing an instrument that you will enjoy learning about is the first step. Maybe you already know what you want to play. If you are not sure, you can attend a concert, visit a music store or listen to different instruments on YouTube.

Some instruments are easy to learn at first, like piano, guitar or voice, but others, like the violin, cello or even the drums, require certain ways to hold and play the instrument but to become proficient, all instruments require daily practice. The piano is a great instrument to learn the basics of music because you can see the notes on the keyboard. But the piano is quite big and hard to carry so maybe you would consider taking flute lessons. So as you can understand, choosing what you enjoy hearing, is a key ingredient for the learning process 😊

When you have settled on the instrument, there are important steps to achieve success. The first is to find a good teacher and find a nice-sounding, affordable instrument. A teacher can help you in finding that instrument, whether it be a banjo, ukelele or piano. There are many music stores that offer rental programs or you can purchase outright.

There are different ways to locate a teacher in your area. You could do a search on Google or maybe a friend knows of someone. But also consider checking with the area schools' music programs: a community college nearby or the university. Some high schools have amazing programs and the teachers probably teach lessons on the side. Or if you went to a concert and really enjoyed a particular player in the performance, you could ask that person if they teach lessons! The goal is to find someone you are comfortable with and then have some fun learning a new skill.

Learning a new instrument is good for the mind and the soul. The key is to be patient and to keep practicing!

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. Plato

I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music. Billy Joel
