Hiking is a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails or footpaths in the
countryside. Walking for pleasure developed in Europe during the
eighteenth century. Religious pilgrimages have existed much longer but
they involve walking long distances for a spiritual purpose associated
with specific religions.
National parks are often important hiking destinations, such as National
Parks of England and Wales; of Canada; of New Zealand, of South Africa,
etc.
Organized hiking clubs emerged in Europe at approximately the same time
as official hiking trails. These clubs established and upheld their own
paths during the 19th and 20th centuries, prioritizing the development
of extended hiking routes. In 1938, the first long-distance hiking trail
in Europe, the Hungarian National Blue Trail, was established in the
Hungarian wilderness, stretching approximately 62 miles (100 km).
