The production and utilization of chemical dyes in textile manufacturing pose significant health risks and environmental challenges. Prolonged or accidental exposure to these dyes can lead to various health hazards for both workers and consumers. Reactive dyes, commonly used in the industry, are associated with respiratory problems, such as respiratory sensitization, causing symptoms like itching, watery eyes, sneezing, and asthma-like conditions. Additionally, dyeing and finishing processes contribute to skin irritation and other discomforts, with specific chemicals exacerbating issues. On an environmental scale, the fashion industry's excessive water usage is a major concern, representing the third-largest global consumer of water. The industry utilizes around 79 billion cubic meters annually, contributing to water stress. Moreover, textile-dyeing and treatment processes release an estimated 8,000 synthetic chemicals, accounting for approximately 20% of global industrial water pollution. The extensive use of azo dyes, especially in cotton dyeing, further compounds the problem, as these dyes have been linked to carcinogenic effects, soil degradation, and harm to aquatic ecosystems. The lack of effective techniques to eliminate dye toxicity from water raises the risk of severe health consequences upon consumption, including blindness, rhabdomyolysis, acute tubular necrosis, vomiting, hypertension, vertigo, and respiratory distress. In textile manufacturing, where over 10,000 dyes are employed, nearly 70% are complex azo dyes, further emphasizing the need for sustainable and safer practices in the industry.
