Making Quilts

A Creative Hobby

I made my first quilt when I joined an adult ed class. I had just graduated from college and relocated for a job. Unfortunately, I didn't know anyone in my new town. In an effort to make friends and stay busy I decided to take an introduction to quilting class.

My first project was hand pieced and hand quilted. I sewed all the pieces together by hand and added the decorative stitching, aka quilting, by hand as well. The process took a long time so for my next venture I borrowed my mom's sewing machine. I learned how to piece by machine and I've never looked back. I still enjoy hand quilting but I am learning how to quilt on a frame too. Below are pictures of quilts I've made. If you hover over the images you will see larger versions to see some of the details.

If you have an interest in the textile arts, I hope you find this site helpful. You will find links to videos and websites to get you started. I've included a link to a great beginner pattern, Yellow Brick Road, which I've used when teaching quiltmaking to adults and middle grade students. I've included a link to Deb Tucker's website because she is a talented quilter, creative thinker and excellent teacher. She makes some of my favorite tools/rulers. Her rulers and shortcuts help YOU make beautiful quilts. If you are lucky, you may have quilt stores in your area. If not, check out the Missouri Star Quilt Company website and its YouTube Channel. The YouTube channel is a great resource for instructional videos for all levels. I use it all the time.

Quilters are friendly people who are eager to share the craft with you. Happy Quilting🧵🪡
