GET SOME SLEEP

Your body and mind will thank you

In our crazy-busy world, sleep is often seen as a time waster. Take, for instance, common phrases that cast sleep in a negative light, like “sleepy little town,” “fever dream” and “asleep at the wheel.” But here’s another phrase to consider: “Sleep is the best medicine.”

Science backs this up. Alongside good nutrition and exercise, sleep is a basic human need. It’s vital for maintaining physical and mental health, because it rejuvenates the body and reboots the brain. According to the U.S. National Center on Sleep Disorders, sleep deficiency is linked to chronic health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. It can also lead to depression, greater likelihood of injuries and accidents, and interfere with work, school and social functioning.

Despite sleep’s many benefits, a third of adults don't regularly get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep, and up to 70 million Americans have sleep disorders. Are you one of them? Take some time to learn about sleep and ways to improve your own. Hopefully soon, nighttime will be full of nothing but sweet dreams!

Do you get enough sleep?
