Christmas Eve in Ukraine

Celebration
Traditionally, Christmas in Ukraine starts on January 6 (Christmas Eve in the Julian calendar). It lasts until the Feast of Epiphany on January 19. At the same time, more and more Ukrainians celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar on December 25.It is in common for ukrainians to celebrate Christmas together with whole family. The main Christmas meal, called 'Sviata Vecheria' (or Holy Supper) is eaten on Christmas Eve (24th December or 6th January). Traditionally people fast (don't eat certain foods) all day but you might start the day drinking some holy water that has been blessed at church.


Food
There is usually a particular sequence of meals on Christmas Eve. First, Ukrainians eat Kutia, then borshch, holubtsi, dumplings, fried fish, cabbage, etc., and drink uzvar. As a rule, children bring dinner, for example, to godparents and grandparents.


Traditions
Christmas is a time when many families and friends come together to celebrate, and in Ukraine the many old traditions connected with this feast day, such as carolling, sitting together on Christmas Eve for a meal of Lenten dishes and performing the nativity play from house to house, are still very much alive.
