Thailand is made up of four distinct regions:
Northern Thailand can be characterised by its rugged forested mountains. Explore jungle trails, caves and stunning waterfalls. The North is a hotspot for those interested in outdoor pursuits - think kayaking, white water rafting, hiking, climbing, caving.
The Northeast of Thailand is also known as the Isaan region. Away from the main tourist trail, this region offers a glimpse into 'real' Thailand. It is also home to many ancient Khmer ruins and is also known for its spicy food. Be sure to try som tam, a spicy papaya salad!
Central Thailand is home to both the modern and the ancient world - from the hot and bustling streets of Bangkok, to the old capital Ayutthaya. Those with an interest in history may also wish to visit the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi, where sadly thousands of prisoners of war suffered, when constructing the railway during WWII.
Southern Thailand has many beautiful beaches and islands, with each island offering something different. Party hard on Koh Phan Ngan at an infamous Full Moon Party; go diving in Koh Tao; or just take it easy at a beautiful resort on Koh Samui.
Thailand is famous all over the world for its food. The blend of sweet, salty, sour and spicy flavours is addictive and keeps you coming back for more. Not only that, but Thailand is also home to lots of amazing exotic fruits. Personally, my favourite fruit is mangosteen. Thai people also love to eat - I mean, can you blame them? Their food is awesome! Street food vendors are everywhere. Here you can buy fresh delicious meals for a very reasonable price. There is so much that you can try from pad krapow, guay tiew reua (boat noodles), and gai yang with som tum. And that doesn't even scratch the surface!
Bangkok - The capital. One of the most vibrant cities in the world, you will never run out of things to do here. The Grand Palace is a must visit with its stunning architechture. You should also try and pay a visit to Wat Pho to see the huge reclining buddha and Wat Arun, which is a beautiful ancient temple. All of these are accessible by boat. Bangkok also has fantastic shopping malls (which can be a great way to escape the heat!). For other shopping try Chatuchak Weekend Market which has bargains everywhere! For those who like a bit of sport, check out either Ratchdamnern or Lumpini Muay Thai stadiums too and watch the 'sport of eight limbs'. Muay Thai is a serious business in Thailand and a great spectacle, with fighters training their whole lives. Bangkok's China Town has a great selection of street food vendors. Honestly this list could go on, but there's a few things just to get you started.
Chiang Mai - City in the Mountainous North. People escape to Chiang Mai for a bit of peace and quiet. It's a more chilled city, set in beautiful mountainous terrain. Highlights include the Doi Inthanon National Park and the various night markets. There are also lots of elephant sanctuaries to choose from but be sure to do your research and pick an ethical one.
Koh Samui - Island in the South. Visit this tropical island and experience life in the slow lane. There are beautiful resorts to stay on here, and lots of things to see. From Samui you can take a boat ride to lots of other islands, like Koh Madsum, which is an island full of wild boars! They can bite so be careful, but none the less it's quite nice spending the morning with pigs! Check out the markets at the Fishermans Village and visit some stunning temples.
Buriram - A developing city in the Isaan region. This is well away from the main tourist trail and gives you a slice of authentic Thailand. Buriram has a few things to offer though. Catch a football game at the Thunderdome, home of Buriram United FC who have been Thailand's most successful football team. Or catch the Moto GP race held every year at the Chang Arena! Not far from Buriram also is the Phanom Rung Historical Park. This is a beautiful ancient temple that is very similar to Angkor Wat in Cambodia (just nowhere near as big!).

Although Thailand has warm weather and sun for much of the year, it does have a tropical climate. The year can be split into 3 distinct seasons - hot, cool and wet. Check what the weather may be like for your next visit to Thailand.
