Candombe is a style of music and dance that originated in Uruguay among the descendants of liberated African slaves.
In 2009, the UNESCO inscribed Candombe in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
It is performed regularly in the streets of old Montevideo's south neighbourhood in january and february, during
Uruguay's Carnival period, and also in the rest of the country. All the comparsas participate in a massive Carnival parade called Las Llamadas.
