Penguins are flightless seabirds that live almost exclusively below
the equator. Some island-dwellers can be found in warmer climates, but
most reside in and around icy Antarctica. A thick layer of blubber and
tightly-packed, oily feathers are ideal for colder temperatures. While
penguins cant fly, their stiff flippers, webbed feet, and sleek shape
make them expert swimmers. In fact, they spend most of their lives in
the ocean and do nearly all of their hunting for krill, squid, and
crabs underwater.
Reasons To Love Penguins
Penguins make good parents. They often keep the same mate for life
and both parents take turns incubating the eggs and feeding and
protecting chicks.
African penguins can swim up to 12 miles per hour while hunting.
A wild penguin eats close to 14 percent of its body weight each day.
For a 150 pound person, that would be like eating 21 pounds of food
a day!
They've got happy feet! Penguins have especially adapted
feet for long-distance walking. In the water, these feet sit flush
to their bodies and act like rudders, controlling the penguins
direction of swimming.
Many male penguins gift female penguins with rocks in order to
woo them.
Penguins have a complex vocal communication system that enables them
to identify each other by distinct sounds.
