For observers, surfing looks simple and uncomplicated, but there’s a lot to learn when you’re just starting. It might look like all you need is a board and some waves (which is true), but there’s a lot of knowledge and experience that you need before you’ll have much success.
When you first start, get yourself on a big board. I’ve seen so many beginners on brand-new, expensive shortboards that are really cool but lack the volume and length for the rider to catch enough waves to actually improve their skills. There is no shame in starting on a ten-foot soft-top longboard that’s easy to paddle and stable to ride.
