Heimaey
My hometown
Vestmannaeyjar is a municipality and archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. Heimaey is the largest island with the population of around 4,500 people. The other 15 islands are uninhabited, but some of them have haunting cabins. Heimaey has been formed by eruptions over the past 10,000 - 12,000 years.
The eruption in 1973
On the 23rd of January 1973 there was an eruption right next to the
town, forcing people to leave in the middle of the night to the
mainland. Around 400 homes were destroyed. The eruption went on for
about 6 months and ended on 3rd of July 1973. The volcano
Eldfell was formed in this eruption.
