Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa neighbouring the more famous tourist countries like Kenya to the East, Tanzania to our South and Rwanda to our Southwest. We share alot of similar kinds of foods with these countries sometimes under different names. Here are some of my favorite Ugandan staples I recommend if you give Uganda a Visit!
Matooke is a tradional food eaten every where in Uganda and most of EA in general. It is made like mashed potatoes but the difference is its from a type of bananas called "East African Highland bananas". It has a bland taste to it and you will need to eat it with some type of stew like a groundnut, beef, chicken, peas stews etc
Chapati also known as roti, safati, shabaati is an unleavened flatbread whole-wheat flour, mixed into dough with water, oil and optional salt and are cooked on a flat skillet or frying pan. Chapatis, although made in many parts of Asia and the islands, The Ugandan or east african chapatis are more dense and thicker. This is why sometimes they are used as wraps to make many different combinations. My absolute favorite combinations are rolexes: a chapati with eggs, cabbage, tomatoes (middle picture) and kikomando:chapati with fried beans (last picture) . These are usually common street foods and they taste delicious!
Mandazi are similar to doughnuts, having a little bit of a sweet taste which can be differentiated with the addition of
different ingredients. However; they are typically less sweet than the United States style of doughnuts and are usually
served without any glazing or frosting. (1st image)
A samosa is a fried or baked pastry with a savory filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, cheese, beef and other
meats, or lentils. It may take different forms, including triangular, cone, or half-moon shapes, depending on the region.
In Uganda, they are made a cone shape.
