Salsa is one of the most popular Latin dances that is practiced
worldwide. The term "salsa" was coined by Johnny Pacheco
in the 1960s in New York, as an umbrella term for Cuban dance music
being played in the city at the time. Salsa as a dance emerged soon
after, being a combination of mambo, Latin dances such as Son and Rumba
as well as American dances such as swing and tap. The two main styles of
salsa are linear and circular. In
linear salsa, dancers remain in their "slot", switching places from one
side of the slot to the other. The second salsa style is circular salsa.
Here, dancers circle around each other, reminiscent of East Coast Swing.
Both Cuban and Colombian salsa follow this circular pattern.
