No! the mate is not a dr*g but the best company you will have. Yerba mate, whose scientific name is Ilex Paraguariensis , is a tree native to the Paranaense rainforest, which in the wild can reach a height of 12 to 16 meters. To facilitate its harvest, the plants are pruned up to twice a year to an average height of 2 meters. In Argentina 🇦🇷, we call mate to the infusion that is prepared with its leaves, as well as to the container where it is drunk, being the most used the pumpkin one. "Mate" is not only drunk in Argentina but also in several parts of South America such as Uruguay🇺🇾, Paraguay🇵🇾, some parts of Chile 🇨🇱 and Brazil🇧🇷 where its name is Chimarrão.

Production
The crop is located in Misiones and northeastern Corrientes. In 2019 the production of ground and packaged yerba mate for the domestic market was almost 277,332,014 million kg. Our country is today the world's leading producer and exporter of yerba mate.
Consumption in Argentina
According to data from the National Institute of Yerba Mate (INYM), Argentina consumes an average of 6.4 kg per inhabitant per year and yerba mate is present in more than 90% of households. Its consumption is highly beneficial for health, since it contains B vitamins, has a great antioxidant power, produces an energizing effect and helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides.
