Poutine is a dish of french fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. It emerged in Quebec in the late 1950s in
the Centre-du-Québec area, though its origins are uncertain and there are several competing claims of having invented
the dish.
I first had poutine when I was in 9th grade. We had lived in Canada for about two years, yet I had never tried this tasty dish. When a friend finally convinced me to have a taste, I was obsessed. The cheese was gooey, the fries were crunch except for the gravy soaked parts. It was heaven on a plate! I couldn't get enough before we moved back to the states.
