The Nevermore Institute of Hauntology; A Reconstruction of the House of Usher is an architectural project based on an interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Fall of The House of Usher. The project takes on some of the ideas from a contemporary science fiction novel and television series called Altered Carbon. The project and dissertation make various assumptions around themes of the Gothic in architecture, family, and concepts of lo ngevity, with respect to Mark Fisher’s concept of Hauntology. The project portrays the idea that the decline of the body and the decline of the physical house in The Fall of the House of Usher is parallel to Altered Carbon’s notion of living forever. The proposal explores longevity through architecture to reconstruct the members of the House of Usher, through consciousness-uploading technologies and genetic engineering, creating a psychological phenomenon.
