Centuries of Viennese Coffee House Culture
The history of espresso in Vienna goes back to the beans the Ottomans
left behind after the Siege of Vienna ended in 1683. Legend has it that
Georg Franz obtained a license to sell espresso after his heroic
fighting during the seige. Although Vienna was not the first place to
brew espresso, its coffee shop culture is known the world over and has
thrived for centuries.
