The mysterious black cat is portrayed as an ominous creature with the
sole purpose to spread fear and misfortune on their nightly rounds.
Legend of their evildoing has reached a point where mice and people
alike scurry when their shadowy figure comes into view. They are viewed
as the companion of witches and Satanists, giddily observing evil
incantations over bubbling cauldrons or chalk-drawn pentagrams on
boarded floors.
But how did this descendant of the panther earn its reputation for being
such a trouble-making hooligan?
As the Bubonic Plauge ravaged Europe and Asia, these bean-toed animals,
who could seemingly melt into the shadows, came under suspicion. People
felt that, since black cats would easily disappear and reappear, they
must have related to the illness that appeared so suddenly and spread so
quickly. It was in those times of fear that black cats began to be
associated more heavily with
witches,
the devil, and general evildoing.

Fortunately for us, we have started to realize that black cats are
exactly the same as their calicoed and striped counterparts. They have
no sinister purposes, no plans to key cars after dark; they just want a
cozy home with a window ledge to watch and silently judge passerby and a
lap to curl up and drift off in at the end of the day.
There are still many black cats who are in need of a home.
Consider fostering or adoption a tiny panther today; they don't have
nefarious plans, but they will bring a bit of magic into your life.
