Travel as we know it today really began during the Greek and Roman periods, as a privilege reserved almost solely for the wealthy. The concept of travelling abroad, back then, was integral to enlightenment and learning. With the advent of new transportation modes such as the railway and airplanes, the number of travellers has grown immensely - rising from just 25 million tourist arrivals in 1950, to 1.4 billion in 2018.
