Shinrin-Yoku(森林浴), literally “Forest Bathing”, first coined by Japanese former Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tomohide Akiyama in 1982, was product of government efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of the tech boom on Japanese city dwellers, such as depression, distraction, aches and pains.
The popularization of the term resulted in some promising studies on the effects of walking among the trees, such as this review relating to blood pressure, or this review on cortisol levels. Even though it is needed more quality research, the activity is being encouraged as preventive measure by doctors to combat stress. So, take advantage of the woodlands near you and enjoy!
