Stories surrounding dragons have been around for millenia, they come in various shapes and sizes and often
considered long-lived if not immortal. Overall, they
were huge beasts, strong, with highly resistant scales, horns and deadly claws. Most are capable of a form of
flight be it through magic or wings.
They had a carnivourous diet which as humanity expanded the stories mentioned that it included humans as well.
Dragons were known in certain stories as masters of magic and there were wizards who learnt from them and gain
power.
Some dragons were made into gods whilst others into villianous pests symbolising sin and depravity. This
depended on the culture telling the story and how it has been
passed down through word of mouth.
Below are a few examples of the types of dragons that exist in mythology:
(More information can be found following the links)
The
Western Dragons
had six limbs altogether; two wings and four legs. The legs were powerful to launch themselves into the sky and
had
deadly claws on the end of them.
They were said to live in warm-temperate/desert climates and make thier dens in natural caves.
This is also where they'd store thier legendary hoard stolen from the surrounding lands. Typically piles of
gold,
jewelary, weaponary and other precious objects.
Legends say they breathed fire and had nigh-impenetrable scales.
A popular story featuring knights defeating the dragon to save the damsel in distress (often a princess) oft
failing
but
everyones hero succeeding and you had a fairytale ending.
The
Wyverns
have four limbs total; two big wings and two hind legs with a long tail. They were said to live in the mountains
and cliffs.
They would use claws on the knuckle of the wing to grip onto ledges similar to bats and would eat cattle from
the local farms.
Depending on the story they may
have a hoard and/or magical powers and some don't. They often tend to be the less intelligent cousin of the
dragon.
The
Sea Dragons,
or the sea serpents resemble sea snakes if enlarged a thousand-fold. They had
mastery over the ocean; jaws that could snap ships in half and bodies a kilometre long.
These would live in the
depths of the ocean and prey on whales,
sharks and the occasional human ship.
There is a
famous serpent in Norse Mythology named Jörmungandr who would eat the world at ragnorok.
The
Lungs
were magical dragons in chinese mythology. They had four limbs and no wings, they were long, some with
feathery/furry tails, long whiskers,
on some horns reminsent of antlers, others of a straighter horn, a wispy beard and a wisdom that spanned the
ages.
The lungs were revered and incredibly
