An overview of Gerwig's evolution, from Mumblecore to Barbie Land
2008 - Nights and Weekends π
Gerwig's initial dive into directing, alongside co-director, co-writer and co-producer: Joe Swanberg,
begins with a long-distance couple's emotional journey between two cities; New York and Chicago. The
minimalist mumblecore style invites us into the tribulations, intimacy and distance of the couple and lets
us feel tangled in their longing.
2017 - Ladybird π
For Gerwig's solo directional debut, the critically acclaimed Ladybird is a beautiful coming-of-age film
that explores the beauty and mundanity of being a teenage girl. A desperate need for a change of scenery and
an equally heartbreaking and heartwarming mother-daughter relationship, Ladybird is one to watch and
re-watch.
2019 - Little Women π―ββοΈ
Another triumphant coming-of-age tale, Gerwig masters Louisa May Alcott's classic novel "Little Women". The
seventh adaption of the book and arguably the most modern and heart-wrenching. Gerwig transcends
stereotypes of romance and allows the viewer a realisitc and emotional protrayal of marital arrangements.

2023 - Barbie π π»
Arguably the most daring and maintstream entry in Gerwig's repertoire: Barbie. The narrative is still born
from Greta's mind, so ofcourse Barbie is struggling with existentialism even in the perfectly plastic Barbie
Land. The emotions, the double entendres and choreography mixed with the messy and imperfect dolls triumphs
as some of Gerwig's funniest writing and clearest vision. If you haven't seen it yet, ask yourself, where
have you been?
