Fighting for Light

A poem by Halee Ludwick

Past screams and stabbing words,
Build the bricks to my walls.
Sorrow breaks through the cracks,
Panicked breaths beat within my chest.
Cruel memories flood the canals of my brain,
Raising the tide to my eyes.
The war declares itself upon my soul,
To revel in the dark or fight for the light.
Advice spoken with scorching resilience,
Light.
A stranger’s laugh after a sarcastic retort,
Light.
When you cursed into me insecurity at the age of seven,
Dark.
Blooming scents from Mom’s stunning garden,
Light.
Tunes from my brother’s guitar strumming pride into my chest,
Light.
Ruined holidays at the hands of your rage,
Dark.
God's loving grace after I make a mistake,
Light.
The love baked in every loaf of grandma’s bread,
Light.
A Needle in your arm instead of us,
Dark.
Lyrics of love on Sunday mornings,
Light.
A sprouting soul from the soil of goals,
Light.
In the shadows of your walls,
fight for light.
