About Venda Culture
In present-day South Africa, Venda culture is rich and vibrant, with a
history dating back centuries. The Venda people are one of many ethnic
groups in the country and have their own distinct language, customs and
traditions.
Venda culture includes the following key aspects:
- Venda people speak Tshivenda, a Bantu language spoken widely in Limpopo province of South Africa. It is also one of the 11 official languages of the country.
- Traditional Venda beliefs are rooted in ancestor worship and strong ties to nature. According to them, all things were created by a supreme being called Thavha-Tsindi. It is believed that the ancestors can influence the living, which is why they are often consultured by rituals and ceremonies.
-
Venda people wear unique traditional attire during cultural
ceremonies and special occasions. Colorful dresses with intricate
patterns are worn by women, while traditional skirts and woven
blankets are worn by men.
